It has been my calling, my extreme pleasure and responsibility, to act as a medical advocate for all animals.

From my childhood I have been obsessed with animals. Frankly, I consider them family. Eventually, inevitably, this lead to a degree in zoology and finally a degree in veterinary medicine.

Ah, many a tale I could tell.

Professionally, I have spayed iguanas

and cockatiels, pulled calves and collected stallions. I have guided puppies into this world and gently escorted elderly, failing animals out of it. Since 1986 I have practiced my gift. For 12 years it was my honor to teach surgery to senior veterinary students at the Veterinary School at UC Davis.

Veterinary practice is intense. In my precious free time,  I have written and performed Cowboy Poetry, even sang in a local rock and roll band.

I dabbled in breeding Siamese fighting fish, Morgan horses, Boston Terriers, Australian parakeets, you name it.  In the midst of this I navigated two marriages and 2 battles with cancer.  The dust has settled - for now. Most importantly I have always been grounded by owning my own ranch. There I am chief cook and bottle washer. I garden, dig post holes, shovel manure, nothing humbles you more or gives you more clarity of thought.

It is my Zen.

Now it delights me to own a herd of Nigerian dwarf dairy goats. They provide a luxurious, rich milk  - the raw material for the most gorgeous cheese! They are company and entertainment and sometimes consternation. The goats are joined by my flock of feisty Serama bantams, the tiniest chickens in the world, tame, charming and silly. I also have big, fluffy, sedate English Orpington chickens, rare color Muscovy ducks and the odd other breed or two. Overseeing and protecting the whole operation are my livestock guardian dogs, Great Pyrenees. I dont know what I would do without them.

My farm has been my brain child for some 30 odd years.  Certainly it has evolved, changed locations, species.  I am blessed to have the support and help of a wonderful cast of human characters that enable this pursuit. Today we are happily nestled in the Lincoln hills amidst the Placer County wine country of California. Good country, good neighbors.

I have met the most wonderful people through my animals. I hope you will be one of them.
